What is Behaviour Modification?

Behaviour Modification: Helping Your Dog Feel Better.

Some dogs don’t need to learn what to do. They need help feeling okay enough to do it. Lunging on leash, panicking when left alone, guarding food, or trembling at the vet aren’t signs of a stubborn dog. They’re signs of a dog who’s worried, overwhelmed, or afraid. Behaviour modification helps change how your dog feels, so the behaviour can change too.

Obedience training teaches skills like sit, stay, and loose-leash walking. Behaviour modification looks at the emotion underneath, asking not just what should my dog do instead? but how does my dog feel right now, and how can we help? A dog can know a perfect “sit” and still be too overwhelmed to offer it when it matters. That’s where this work begins.

Every program starts with a consultation and is built around your dog, using gentle, Fear Free methods and steady support for you along the way.

What to expect in a behaviour modification program

  • It starts with understanding. A consultation to learn your dog’s history, health, triggers, and the moments that feel hardest.
  • A plan built around your dog. Clear, realistic goals, at a pace your dog can handle.
  • Safety and management first. Small changes at home and on walks to ease daily stress, often with quick relief.
  • Gentle, science-based methods. Fear Free, always. Fear can’t be trained out with more fear. We don’t use pain, intimidation, prong or shock equipment.
  • Progress that’s real, not rushed. Some weeks bring big leaps, others feel quieter. We’ll help you see the wins.
  • Support for you, too. Coaching, body language skills, and tools to keep going between sessions.
  • Collaboration when it’s needed. We work alongside your veterinarian, as part of your dog’s whole wellbeing.

The goal isn’t a “fixed” dog. It’s a dog who feels more at ease so they can choose more desirable behaviours, and a guardian who feels ready to support them.

How Do I Prepare for a Consultation?

A behavioural consultation is a 90 minute deep dive into your dog's life, routines, health, and behaviour history. We will review your intake questionnaire in advance and will ask you questions to help us better understand the behavioural challenges you are concerned with.

We may ask you to gather video or other data tracking of your dog's behaviour before our consultation, and if so, we will provide detailed information on how to do this.

Within 3-4 business days after the consultation, you will receive a writen actionable training plan. This plan may include but is not limited to:

  • educational resources for the human side: recommended readings/videos for you to complete before any formal training begins, (others will be given during the training process).
  • management strategies with instructions on their implementation - there will often be some required prior to your first training session.
  • training activities, frequency, instructions and tutorials etc.
  • data gathering recommendations - we will frequently ask you to track information on your dog's behaviour so that we not relying on memories (which shifts and changes over time). We will ask you to share this with us before or during our training sessions.

Training sessions are scheduled after the consultation once a week.

What training methods do your trainers use?

All of the Fearless Tails trainers are certified professionals with credentials from industry recognized, force free, positive reinforcement training programs.

If you are looking for someone to help you show your dog who is the “alpha” or “the boss”, at the cost of their welfare; then we are likely not the right trainers for you.

But if you want to explore how your dog’s mental, emotional and physical wellbeing comes together with humane and effective training that you and your dog will enjoy, then we can’t wait to work with you!

Alpha and punishment based training methods have been associated with behavioural fall out, and both the American and Canadian veterinary societies have recommended against these methods.

With a commitment to force-free, positive reinforcement training, we will:

  • Treat both you and your dog with compassion
  • Always make sure you understand “why” behind the training we’re doing
  • Customize training that respects your dog’s unique personality and well-being – no fear, intimidation, or pain will ever be used.
  • While we do not use or recommend slip, choke, prong or e-collars or vibration collars, please be aware that we will work with you and your dog to safely transition to improving behaviour without these tools.

If you have more questions about our approach to training, don't hesitate to submit an inquiry and let us know your questions.

Does your training come with a guarantee?

We do not provide guarantees - aside from it being unethical to guarantee the behaviour of another sentient being; outcomes vary by dog, individual guardians, family, environment, time and many other variables. Check out the Humane training resources at the bottom of this page for more information.

What if I need help with more than one dog!

Our behaviour modification packages are typically focused on one dog at a time. If that dog has inter dog challenges, we will endeavour to address it with a single training plan.

However, if your situation requires separate training plans and sessions for more than one dog, an additional per package or per session fee will apply, and will vary by complexity - $45 - $200 + HST.

“UPDATE: It’s been a few months since we took the Roaring to Relaxed course with Tasha and just recently we have seen an incredible transformation in my dog – the result of sticking with this program- she is calm around other dogs, does a proper nose to tail greeting and is 100% more relaxed – it’s like i have a different dog at the end of the leash. I couldn’t be happier or recommend this course more highly (what follows is my review just after we took the course).”

“Tasha is an amazing trainer – we have been working with her for the past 10 weeks to deal with reactivity issues and I feel like I have an extraordinary tool kit now to help my dog. She has been making steady improvement. The course is thorough and Tasha provides continuous and varied feedback (in person, over videos, through the online zoom sessions, emails and text). I give this course my highest recommendation — we have been through several trainers and Tasha is the best.”

“We started working with Tasha when our British Bulldog, Miss Mable, was about 5 months old. Within a session we were working on basic commands and addressing pressing issues (potty training!). As COVID lifted and we started to go out more, alone time and separation anxiety also became a concern. With Tasha’s support and her compassionate, methodical systems, it was a straightforward process to ensure she was calm when we left. Mable is now a happy, confident teenager who loves to walk, cuddle and play with respect. We will continue to work with Tasha throughout Mable’s life to ensure ongoing progress and fun. Thank you Fearless Tails!”

We were looking for a trainer that we could work with over multiple sessions to help with our Bernedoodle pup Seba’s adolescent phase. We wanted to focus on leash walking (our pup was pulling the leash A LOT), how to greet visitors (especially since we haven’t had many because of COVID) and recall. The meet & greet with Tasha was super helpful – I immediately felt comfortable that we would be working with her and felt confident that we would make progress on our areas of focus. Tasha provided useful tips and tricks for us to use as a family and was willing to answer questions throughout and adjust the training plan as needed. In addition, working with Tasha over the course of a few months enabled us to see Seba’s progress and prioritize what we wanted to work on for our final sessions. Would highly recommend working with Tasha and Fearless Tails for your training needs!

Serra S.

Working with Tasha was such a wonderful experience. She is very positive, organized, caring, truly knowledgeable and understands dogs’ behaviours and everything. She taught and provided my family lots of information and techniques which really helped us understand our pup.( From puppy to adolescent phase) We are looking forward to work with her more in the future.
Thank you, Tasha.

“Today was the first time I’ve taken Sonny into the vet. He’s 1.5 years old, but because of Covid, I’ve always had to wait in the car. On the walk in, we passed three dogs at close range. When I saw them coming I would nose touch him behind me, into a corner or turned away from the other dog. Once the dog passed we 1-2-3ed to our exam room. The technician complimented me on my great techniques to get Sonny to the room. While waiting, we played games.

Overall I felt very prepared because of the tools I learned from the Roaring to Relaxed class!”

Humane Training

Essential to a well-adjusted, happy, & confident dog.

In an unregulated industry such as dog training, it’s important to understand the facts around methodology and the effects on your dog’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Both the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior have released statements addressing the benefits of humane training methods, and the unintended fallout of more “traditional” methods.
